INFORMATION PACK: INFORMATION ON THE HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND

Highland Life Information Pack

Highland Life have published an information pack which contains details of services provided in the Highlands including transport, health, education (for +16 and including ESOL). It is available in different languages including;-
Bengali, Polish, Russian, Chinese, Latvian

Here is the introduction to give you a flavour –

Whether you have just arrived or you have chosen the Highlands as your home, to live and work here then this guide is for you. Leaving home and moving to a new country can be difficult so we want to help.

In the Highlands we have all the facilities you need:

  • hospitals
  • health centres
  • schools
  • public transport – trains, buses
  • modern amenities
  • telecommunications network

In addition to the range of outdoor activities, there are thriving amateur sports leagues and cultural activities throughout the year.

This pack gives general information, but you should always get more information based on your own situation. For additional information, click on the web links.

EAL Highland have developed some Smartboard Resources to support Teddy Talk and Big Bear Banter activities. Sadly, the file type cannot be imported into the Blog so if you would like a copy of any of these please contact peter.fenton@highland.gov.uk with your email address and which resource you would like to see and he will send it on as an attachment.

Big Bear Banter

Our Teddy Talk activities for nurseries have just grown up!

Big Bear Banter is a series of activities for pupils in P1 to P3  who are new to English.  They include flashcard activities, story activities and using songs and rhymes. There are a host of different topics and links to further resources.

The BBB resources are now part of the New to English EAL Induction Pack for Primary. The pack now includes  links  to online resources eg. online flashcards, animated stories, YouTube videos, songs and interactive games.

N.B. This document is a live document which is currently being updated.

As always if you find additional resources or make up your own topics then please share them with us and we can add them to the pack.

World Stories website

This website contains lots of stories in many different languages. It has audio files and there is usually both English and other language version of the story. Once registered on the site, you have access to EAL guides which detail grammar and vocabulary included in the stories and other teacher guides and support.
