A table for secondary EAL students to record key vocabulary in different subjects.

  • Key vocabulary can be provided by subject teachers (if new to english) or by  the students themselves when they start a new topic.
  • The table can be adaped for any language, but here are a few templates.

Using technology to Support EAL Learners in Secondary Schools

An easy use resource which is full of apps/ extensions/websites to support EAL learners to  develop their English skills and to access the curriculum.  This is a ‘live’ document which will be updated regularly so we would recommend that you store it in Google Drive.

Be Bilingual Leaflets

These leaflets are published by Aberdeenshire EAL Service and promote bilingualism and the benefits of maintaining and developing home languages. They are published in a number of different languages and aslo have links for further information.

Understanding and Supporting Multilingual Language and Literacy

Good link to a CPD session hosted by LALCO (Language and Literacy Research Group) looking at:-

  1. Teachers’ beliefs about meeting the literacy needs of pupils learning English as an additional language
  2. Bilingualism and (bi)literacy: myths, facts and challenges
  3. Early reading in languages other than English: similarities, differences and transfer
  4. Multi-contextual vocabulary instruction for children learning English as an additional language

Booklets for New Pupils from Essex County Council

Essex County Council have produced a number of booklets with useful phrases for new pupils in a variety of languages. Can be used by teachers and pupils to ease communication and by parents to get messages across to schools and vice versa.
